The trucking industry is the lifeblood of the US economy, and data from the American Trucking Organization proves this. In 2021, the US trucking industry hauled 10.93 billion tons of freight, representing 72.2 percent of all domestic tonnage. Almost all goods consumed in the country were moved by truck at some point. The trucking industry posted $875.5 billion in revenue that year, representing 80.8 percent of the country’s freight bill.

In addition to moving freight, the trucking industry contributed highly to US employment and taxes. The industry directly employed 3.49 million truck drivers in 2021. Furthermore, there were 7.99 million working in jobs related to trucking. Regarding taxes, commercial trucks made up 14.1 percent of registered vehicles in the country in 2020, and contributed $18.3 billion to federal highway-user taxes. Their state highway-user taxes contribution amounted to $30.1 billion.
