The Attributes of Commercial Tires

Instead of P-metric (passenger) and LT (light truck) tires, semi-trucks rely on commercial tires. These are generally manufactured of harder rubber and are larger and have more tread than their non-commercial counterparts. Reflecting this size and quality difference, they are significantly more expensive than non-commercial tires.

Some 200 raw materials, including synthetic and natural rubber, go into a commercial tire. With the latter naturally white, the tire is turned black by incorporating carbon black and silica. These fillers serve to reinforce the tires, and chemicals such as zinc oxide and sulfur are also added to boost performance and assist with the vulcanization process. Commercial tires contain reinforcements, which include textile and metallic reinforcements that enhance form and rigidity.
