American truckers transport cargo by using the best trailer for the type of cargo. For instance, flatbed trailers are popular choices for transporting heavy cargo. Since they open from all sides, flatbed trailers are versatile and convenient for transporting open-air cargo such as lumber, steel, and construction equipment.

Enclosed trailers, also known as dry van trailers, enclose the cargo and can carry goods weighing 42,000 to 45,000 pounds. Enclosed trailers transport water-sensitive items such as groceries and pallet-based or loose items.

Truckers use lowboy or double drop trailers, which are short in height, to transport large, heavy machinery such as excavation equipment. In addition, lowboys are often fitted with a hauling compartment that can support a maximum weight of 45,000 lbs.
